INSTRUCTIONS:
THE GAMES KNOWN AS PATIENCE OR SOLITAIRE ARE AMONG THE OLDEST KNOWN PASTIMES
WITH CARDS. TOMMY'S TOYS IMPLEMENTS THE FORMS AS GIVEN IN "THE COMPLETE BOOK
OF SOLITAIRE AND PATIENCE GAMES", BY ALBERT MOREHEAD AND GEOFFREY MOTT-SMITH
(GROSSET & DUNLAP, 1949).
THIS PROGRAM IMPLEMENTS THE FOLLOWING PATIENCE GAMES:
1. GOLF
2. FORTRESS
3. THE BELEAGUERED CASTLE
4. POKER SQUARES
THE COMPUTER CAN ALSO PLAY WHILE YOU WATCH FOR A DEMO.
THE DECK:
THE DECK CONSISTS OF 52 CARDS. IT IS USUALLY DISPLAYED IN THE LOWER RIGHT HAND
CORNER OF THE SCREEN.
THE SHUFFLE:
TO MAKE IT EASIER TO WIN, WE ALWAYS START OUT WITH A NEW (ORDERED) DECK, THEN
SHUFFLE IT EXACTLY 3 TIMES AND CUT IT, WITH AT LEAST 5 CARDS IN EACH PACKET.
THIS INSURES THAT THERE ARE PLENTY OF SEQUENTIAL RUNS IN THE DECK.
FOR THE HIGH ROLLERS, WE PROVIDE THE OPTION TO START WITH A COMPLETELY RANDOM
ORDER INSTEAD (ANSWER NO TO THE 'NEW DECK EACH TIME' QUESTION).
RULES:

1. GOLF
INITIAL TABLEAU. DEAL A ROW OF 7 CARDS FACE UP. DEAL 4 MORE ROWS FACE UP
ON THE FIRST, WITH ALL CARDS IDENTIFIABLE. THAT MAKES 35 CARDS TOTAL.
PLAY. TURN UP THE FIRST HAND CARD AND FOUND THE TALON (FACE-UP). THE OBJECT
IS TO REMOVE ALL CARDS FROM THE TABLEAU AND PLACE ON THE TALON. TO REMOVE
A CARD FROM THE TABLEAU IT MUST BE AT THE TOP OF A PILE (BOTTOM OF THE COLUMN
ON THE SCREEN) AND IN SEQUENCE WITH THE TOP CARD OF THE TALON EITHER 1 HIGHER
OR 1 LOWER. SUITS ARE IGNORED. BUT THE SEQUENCE IS NOT CIRCULAR: ONLY A 2
MAY BE PLAYED ON AN ACE, AND A KING STOPS THE TALON.
AFTER THE TALON IS STOPPED (NO MORE CARDS CAN BE PLAYED FROM THE TABLEAU),
ANOTHER CARD IS DEALT FROM THE HAND ONTO THE TALON AND PLAY RESUMES, UNTIL
THE TABLEAU IS CLEARED, OR THE HAND IS EXHAUSTED AND THE TALON IS STOPPED.
SCORING. A GAME IS 9 "HOLES" OR HANDS. PAR IS 36 "STROKES", THAT IS, CARDS
LEFT IN THE TABLEAU AT THE END OF A HAND. IF THE TABLEAU IS CLEARED, ANY
CARDS REMAINING IN THE HAND COUNT ONE "MINUS STROKE" EACH. TO MAKE IT
EASIER FOR YOU, YOUR SCORE DURING THE HAND IS THE NUMBER OF TABLEAU CARDS
PLAYED TO THE TALON; IF YOU CLEAR THE TABLEAU, YOU GET A BONUS SCORE EQUAL
TO THE NUMBER OF REMAINING HAND CARDS.
TO ENTER MOVES:
HIT "1" THRU "7" TO PLAY THE TOP CARD ON THAT TABLEAU COLUMN TO THE TALON.
HIT "N" OR "D" OR THE ENTER KEY TO DRAW THE NEXT CARD FROM THE HAND TO THE
TALON.
HIT "X" TO GIVE UP AND START ANOTHER GAME.

2. FORTRESS
DEAL 5 CARDS FACE UP IN EACH OF 2 COLUMNS CALLED THE LEFT AND RIGHT WINGS.
THE REST OF THE PACK IS THEN DEALT IN ADDITIONAL COLUMNS OVERLAPPING TO THE
RIGHT ON BOTH WINGS. THE LAST 2 CARDS GO TO THE TOP ROW, ONE TO EACH WING.
THE TABLEAU THUS CONSISTS OF 1 ROW OF 6 CARDS AND 4 ROWS OF 5 CARDS ON EACH
WING.
FOUNDATIONS. THERE ARE 4 FOUNDATION PILES, ONE FOR EACH SUIT, RUNNING DOWN
THE MIDDLE BETWEEN THE WINGS.
PLAY. FOUNDATIONS ARE BUILT UP FROM ACE TO KING IN SUIT. ONLY THE UPPERMOST
(EXTREME RIGHT) CARD OF EACH ROW IS AVAILABLE. AN AVAILABLE CARD MAY BE
MOVED ONTO ANOTHER OF THE SAME SUIT WITH WHICH IT IS IN SEQUENCE, EITHER UP
OR DOWN. SPACES MAY BE FILLED BY ANY AVAILABLE CARDS.
SCORE IS NUMBER OF CARDS BUILT ON THE FOUNDATIONS, MAX 52.
TO MAKE MOVES:
THE LEFT WING ROWS ARE NUMBERED A-E FROM TOP TO BOTTOM, AND THE RIGHT WING
ROWS ARE NUMBERED G-K. (NOTE THAT F IS MISSING).
TO MOVE THE UPPERMOST CARD OF ROW N TO A FOUNDATION, TYPE NF, WHERE N=A..K.
TO MOVE THE UPPERMOST CARD OF ROW N TO ROW M, TYPE NM (E.G., AC OR BK).
TYPE X TO GIVE UP AND START A NEW HAND.
TO QUIT A MOVE IN THE MIDDLE, HIT 0.
*CHEAT BUTTON* SINCE THIS GAME SO FREQUENTLY LOCKS UP, YOU CAN CAUSE A ROW
TO ROTATE LEFT CIRCULARLY 1 CARD. JUST TYPE .N, WHERE N=A..K. NOTE THAT THIS
CAUSES YOUR SCORE TO DECREASE BY 1, AND MIGHT GO NEGATIVE.

3. THE BELEAGUERED CASTLE
START BY REMOVING THE 4 ACES AND LAYING THEM FACE UP TO START 4 FOUNDATION
PILES. THEN DEAL 2 WINGS OF 4 ROWS, 6 CARDS LIKE IN FORTRESS.
PLAY. FOUNDATIONS ARE BUILT UP IN SUIT AND SEQUENCE ACE TO KING.
ONLY THE UPPERMOST (EXTREME RIGHT) CARD OF EACH ROW IS AVAILABLE. AN
AVAILABLE CARD MAY BE MOVED ONTO ANOTHER OF NEXT-HIGHER RANK, REGARDLESS
OF SUITS. SPACES MAY BE FILLED BY ANY AVAILABLE CARDS.
SCORE IS NUMBER OF CARDS BUILT ON FOUNDATIONS, MAX 52.

4. POKER SQUARES
AFTER THE DECK IS SHUFFLED, 25 CARDS ARE DRAWN 1 BY 1, AND THE PLAYER PLACES
EACH CARD IN TURN INTO A 5 X 5 CARD GRID. AT THE END, EACH ROW AND COLUMN
OF THE GRID IS SCORED AS A POKER HAND AND THE TOTAL SCORE RECORDED.
SCORING IS EITHER BY THE ENGLISH OR AMERICAN SYSTEM, PLAYER'S OPTION:

THE ENGLISH SCORING SYSTEM IS TUNED TO THE POKER SQUARES GAME ITSELF, WHEREAS
THE AMERICAN SYSTEM IS BASED ON THE GAME OF POKER PER SE, TO THROW YOU OFF (HA
HA).
TO ENTER MOVES: JUST ENTER THE ROW NUMBER (1-5) THEN THE COLUMN NUMBER (1-5).
TO START OVER IN THE MIDDLE OF A MOVE, HIT 0.

F1 DEMO MODE TOGGLE SWITCH.
F2 CHANGE THE SCREEN BORDER COLOR (COLOR MONITORS ONLY).
F3,F4 CHANGE THE COLOR OF THE CARD BACKS.
F5 DISPLAY THESE INSTRUCTIONS.
F7 KEEP/SWITCH GAME TYPE TOGGLE SWITCH: WHEN A NEW GAME IS STARTED,
THIS CONTROLS WHETHER A NEW GAME TYPE WILL BE PROMPTED FOR, OR
WHETHER THE SAME GAME TYPE WILL BE CONTINUED WITHOUT PROMPTING.
F8 ABORT THE GAME AND START A NEW ONE OF TYPE CONTROLLED BY F7.
F9 QUIT THE PROGRAM ON CONFIRMATION (YOU CAN ALSO HIT THE ESC KEY
OR THE "Q" KEY).
F10 SOUND EFFECTS ON/OFF TOGGLE SWITCH.
*NOTE* THE LEGENDS FOR ALL "TOGGLE" SWITCHES DISPLAY THE MODE THAT WILL BE
ENTERED AFTER PRESSING THE KEY, WHICH IS THE OPPOSITE OF THE MODE IN EFFECT
AT THE TIME.
ARROW KEYS:
TO CHANGE THE PITCH OF THE CARD DRAW: USE THE LEFT AND RIGHT ARROW KEYS ON
THE NUMERIC KEY PAD.
TO CHANGE THE SPEED OF THE DEMO MODE: USE THE UP AND DOWN ARROW KEYS ON THE
NUMERIC KEY PAD. THE NUMBER OF SECONDS THE PROGRAM WAITS BETWEEN DRAWS IS
SHOWN IN THE LOWER RIGHT HAND CORNER OF THE SCREEN (.1 TO 9.9 SECONDS).
TO SKIP THE STARTUP MUSIC: HIT THE <ENTER> KEY TWICE INSTEAD OF ONCE WHEN
RUNNING THE PROGRAM FROM DOS.
